Zambia/IMF: The country will get 1.3bn USD from the IMF so as to be able to “restore economic stability and foster higher and more inclusive growth”. To get the loan, Zambia has had to promise to abolish fuel subsidies, “make agricultural subsidies more efficient” and fight corruption.

South Africa/Ecology: Shell’s 2014 permit to explore for oil and gas off the Wild Coast has been revoked by a South African court. “Coastal communities have campaigned for sustainable eco-tourism of the Wild Coast instead of drilling for oil and gas.” Shell can still appeal the verdict.

South Africa/Xenophobia: Operation Dudula protesters are trying to stop foreign nationals from getting treatment at South African hospitals, saying that the foreigners are placing an undue burden on the country’s heath system. The Health minister has warned the protestors that is “not up to ordinary citizens to enforce the country's immigration law” and that anyone living in the country has a right to access healthcare.

Burkina Faso: A 83-year-old nun who was kidnapped in April has been released and is said to be in good health. Neither the conditions of her release nor the identity of the kidnappers is known.
